This tutorial assumes you’re already logged into cPanel.

Click on the INDEX MANAGER icon. The index manager enables you to control how directories on your website are displayed. If there is no index.html file in a given directory, the contents of that directory will be DISPLAYED in a browser. This is typically undesirable and can cause security issues.

With INDEX MANAGER you can set up your account in such a way that your directory content will not be shown.

Navigate to the directory you wish to set up an index manager for.

Click on the selected file icon.

You have four settings to choose from:

DEFAULT SYSTEM SETTING: this allows the directory content to be shown.

NO INDEXING: does not allow directory content to be shown.

STANDARD INEXING (TEXT ONLY): prevents browsers from viewing the contents of the directories that do NOT contain image files.

FANCYING INDEXING (GRAPHICS): prevents browsers from viewing the contents of directories that DO contain image files.

Select the desired indexing type and then click the SAVE button.

That’s it! Your index settings are now updated.

Click the GO BACK link.

To change the settings back to default, simply select the DEFAULT SYSTEM SETTING button and click SAVE.

You now know how to use the Index Manager feature in cPanel.
