DreamHost is one of the older web hosting providers, considering that they’ve been offering hosting solutions for over 13 years now. Starting out with one server and now boasting over 1,500 servers, they have definitely come a long ways since their earlier days.

One of the unique things among DreamHost is their attitude. In fact, you probably won’t find many hosts with the personality that DreamHost has shown the world over the years. They pride themselves upon putting the customer first and offering hosting solutions that gives you a bang for your buck.

Let’s take a look at DreamHost and see what they’re truly made of during this exclusive Web Hosting Billboard review. 🙂 I know that’s why you’re here. 😉

Price Value

DreamHost only offers one shared hosting plan and that will cost you about $8.95 per month. That’s without any of the add-ons that they make available to you. Sure, this is more expensive than some of their competitors, but it’s not outrageously expensive either.

I would say that for this price, I would expect a little bit more than what they offer. When I say that, I mean premium support without having to pay more for it. Then again, they do offer unlimited hosting which is a plus in my book.

When looking at their features, I was pretty satisfied with their offerings. Here’s a few hosting features that caught my eye while writing up this review.

  • Free domain registration with WHOIS privacy.
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • Unlimited E-mail Addresses
  • Free Google AdWords Credit

Of course, DreamHost does offer quite a few more awesome features. These were just some of the best ones that I wanted to show you while acquainting you with this hosting company. I would say as far as features, they definitely provide their customers with a pretty good value.

During my investigation of DreamHost performance, I quickly found out that their servers aren’t what are normally used by web hosting providers. By that I mean that they use slower servers than most hosts.

Also, by seeing feedback from current/former DreamHost customers, I have to conclude that they haven’t had the best reputation when it comes to the speed of their web hosting plans.

Sure, some have expressed great things about the performance over at DreamHost, but the majority of customers have submitted negative performance reviews.

As far as reliability is concerned, DreamHost does offer a 100% uptime guarantee. If your website goes down, they will credit your bill as per their uptime guarantee that’s outlined on their website.

However, they don’t have any form of redundancy instilled on their servers, meaning that it’s not realistic that their customers’ websites will be online 100% of the time. With that said, I would have to say that their reliability isn’t the best in the industry.

This is where the fun starts. Of course, I did test out DreamHost’s support personally just as I do with all of the other hosts that I review here at Web Hosting Billboard. I also investigated their support reputation by reading various consumer reviews.

My findings were that their support is poor. Now, I wouldn’t be saying this just to say it, so let me explain how I came to this conclusion.

When I went to their website and spoke with George via live chat, he seemed to be awesome when it came to answering my simple questions. However, when I started to get a little bit more technical, he claimed to be waiting on a response from his admin. I would have to say that I was waiting for the answer for at least 15 minutes.

This brought about another question that I had, since it was already taking forever just to answer 1 question, which for a hosting company is common knowledge, just how long on average does it take them to answer their support inquiries from their customers? Well, the answer told me they have some of the worst support in the industry, on average a DreamHost customer waits for TWO HOURS just to get an answer from an administrator.

I don’t know about you, but this is ridiculous in the days where hosting has set standards which provide answers a lot quicker than two hours. In all of the years I have been in the hosting industry, this is the worst support I have seen from a company as big as DreamHost.

While it may not be the worst ever, it’s pretty darn close to it. I have to recommend that you look for a host who has proven that they have excellent support. Not one that takes forever to answer your questions, much less have tons of negative feedback directly related to their poor support.

Love Factor

Do I have any love for DreamHost? Well, if they could do better in terms of assisting their customers, I would. Sadly, this is not the reality of DreamHost and my love is definitely not going to be won over completely here in this review. Support is one of my pet peeves and if a host can’t provide good support, they don’t deserve to win over customers.

After all, why would you choose a host who takes forever to answer your questions when there are plenty of hosts who bend over backwards to provide the best support the web hosting industry has ever seen?
