When it comes to choosing the correct web host, one of the things that you should consider is what control panel (if any) is included. When it comes to control panels, there are a few standards that you will see no matter what web hosting company you go with.
That said, some hosts only offer one or two while others may give you more options. As for which control panel is the best, this is a somewhat subjective question. (We welcome your comments about the debate below.)
Common Web Hosting Control Panels
- cPanel – This is pretty much an industry standard when it comes to web hosting panels. While it has its pros and cons like all the rest, many people stand by their love for cPanel.
- Plesk – The other big mainstay when it comes to web hosting control panels is Plesk. This is a little more visual than cPanel, but it offers just as much (if not a little more) power over your server via a GUI.
Exotic Web Hosting Control Panels
While you may have heard of those if you’re at all familiar with web hosting, here are a couple that you may not have heard about before.
- CWIpanel – For Windows based servers, this gives a control panel that is similar to many linux based control panels.
- GNUpanel – Currently under development, this is an open-source way to mange your web server.
There are, of course, many, many other control panel software packages out there. If you have any exotic or very cool control panels for web server environments, please let us know.
As for comparing the various control panel software available with most web hosts, it all comes down to personal preference and what your host provides – or what you install. For most, Plesk or cPanel will be more than enough to get the job done on a Linux server. We’d like to hear from you on what your favorite is. Leave a comment below.
